Things to do and see in Nottingham –
The Elizabethan house known as Wallaton Hall and Park was constructed in 1588 and is surrounded by 500 acres of park land over a natural hill. The hall has four towers on each corner, and contains the National History Museum, with various ancient as well as recent galleries. Also, there is a Tudor Kitchen which visitors can access for an interactive experience.
Another exciting visit can be made to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, which is a little inn of an old-fashioned nature that can be visited at any time for the importance of its background. It has been divided into rooms and caves, each of which have been given a rather twisted title and some are thought to be haunted by ghosts of previous landlords! The food and drink caters to many different tastes and the atmosphere is very close-knit and welcoming with e.g. Storytelling Nights every last Thursday of the month and special events held every now and then.
Another adventure is a visit to the City of Caves, underneath the city of Nottingham, within what are the novel Anglo-Saxon tunnels. It is an enlightening experience to see adaptations made by people to the caves over the centuries and the uses they were put to. The Enchanted Well and Tannery are other historical areas to explore, and it is said that all your wishes made at the Well will come true!
The Galleries of Justice are a cringing visit to all things legal and illegal – the site was used as courts for about two centuries and the tour teaches much about Executions, Dungeons, Great Train Robbers and what have you! Group bookings can be made to allow for tours and there are various attention grabbing exhibitions to keep things interesting.
For a greater insight into the city itself, visit the Brewhouse Yard Museum of Nottingham Life, which looks at life in the city for the last three hundred years. With creative displays that let you look into old shop windows, Victorian homes and the WW2 Raid Shelter, there is a lot to learn and experience first hand about the history that marks the land.
With shopping centres, department stores, theatres and concert halls, the city, overall, is a dynamic stop for all things entertaining.
